Allen Deluxe 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (1.25-Inch Receiver)
By: Allen Bike Racks       Average Rating: 4.5     Total Reviews: 85
More Information

Easy to use     On: 2008-06-09

Good, solid rack. You will need to carry two wrenches to get it on and off, but removing the rack only takes about 20 seconds. The metal hook on the strap could use a plastic or rubber coating to protect the paint on the car trunk, but I just added some padding of my own and all is well.
Easy to use     On: 2008-06-04

Easy to use. Holds bike securely. Love that it tilts down with the pull of a knob so I can get into the back of my SUV easily while its attached.
Nice!     On: 2008-06-01

Easy assembly and mounting plus is very secure in carrying bikes though would suggest a lock for the mounting pin to keep it from disappearing.
Good value for the money     On: 2008-05-29

This is a well constructed product for the money. The bike restraints should be rubber instead of nylon but they work well. The frame is very sturdy, strong and light. It has a nice lowering mechanism, but can be difficult to use with three - four bikes. Great with one - two bikes. Bikes are hold very securely to the frame. I would definitely recommend this one.
Great rack, but caution for Toyota Sienna...     On: 2008-05-25

The bike rack is great. Its easy to put together, and just as easy to work. Only issue has been that it comes within centimeters of the back of our Toyota Sienna (with an after-market hitch from Uhaul). Weve put some rubber cushioning between the rack and the Sienna that should solve it, but if youve got a Sienna - be warned.
Good price for bike rack     On: 2008-05-08

Allen Deluxe 4-Bike Hitch Mount RackI have not used the rack yet, but it appears to be strong and well built....very good for the price.

excellent buy     On: 2008-05-05

A great carrier, easily assembled and mounted on the hitch. I installed it on a 2005 Elantra w/no problem, when not in use the "arms" fold down and out of the way with a simple click of a release knob. The carrier doesnt interfere at all with normal opening and closing of trunk. It should be noted that an anti-sway bolt that attaches to the hitch makes this a carrier that cannot be entirely removed from the car quickly, the bolt has to be removed first. Consider this carrier to be a semi-permanant addition that can be left on all season, extremely well-made.

Great Product. Great Value     On: 2008-05-03

No issues, no problems. Works great as intended. There is no strap required from the top of the carrier to the vehicle as another reviewer claimed.

Good Value. Solid rack. There is no need to buy name brand. This works as well or better than some. The folding arms are a must. Some of the name brand racks dont have this option.

As other reviewers have indicated the rack does not lock in place with a standard two inch receiver hitch pin. Instead a shoulder bolt with nylon lock nut is used. The shoulder bolt works to pinch the rack to one side in your vehicle receiver tube. Works great to eliminate side sway.
Can't lock it to your hitch!     On: 2008-04-10

The rack it self, no complaints, but if you plan on traveling and want to lock your rack to your hitch and your bikes to your rack, so you can go into the diner to get something to eat and not worry about your bikes missing, well theres the problem, they dont make a hitch lock for it. The hole on the rack is 3/8" and the smallest hitch lock is 1/2". I look high and low, found nothing, I call Allen Racks 800 number, and customer service told me there is no lock for it, send it back to Amazon and get your money back, this is what they told me, if shipping wasnt $20.00 I would of! So the next best thing is get yourself a 1/2" drill bit and make the hole bigger, it took me 5 minutes and I was on my way. The only thing is I think I voided the warranty by making the hole bigger, but it does work and works good. Something to think about before you buy one.
Great Product for the money     On: 2008-03-30

Having thoroughly researched 4 bike carriers, I was dubious of the quality of this prior to receiving it. Other name brand carriers can run $200-300 or more. Still, the reviews on Amazon were good so I thought Id give it a try.
Glad I did.

This is a great product - easy to assemble, easy to attach, bikes are easy to load and unload. Very steady when traveling - very little sway. I also purchased the locking pin for securing it to my 2 inch receiver. Ive left it on my Yukon for a couple of weeks now - folded down it is unobtrusive. This is a quality product and Im glad I trusted the reviews.
Great bike rack     On: 2008-03-25

Ive only used this once, but setup according to the instructions was very straightforward and takes 1/2 hr. Only four stars because as others have noted, it would be better to have a 1/2-in standard size hole for a locking pin. I ended up drilling the hole bigger and there is a bit of wiggle now but it still performs great, so I am happy.
Good Surprise     On: 2008-02-13

We looked at the more popular brand names in the bicycle and outdoor shops; but, I thought they were over priced. I look on Amazon and found the Allen rack at what seemed to be a more reasonable price. I ordered it expecting a somewhat less sturdy model considering the lesser price. To my surprise it is at least as sturdy as any of the much more expensive brands I looked at and works great!
After several months of use it still works great and is very secure. The only reason I have taken off one star is because the finish is not holding up well. Quite a bit of rust showing in less than a year.
Good Value     On: 2008-01-25

Strong Sturdy Frame. Nice lowering mechanism, but quite difficult to do with 3-4 bikes onboard (heavy to get back up). Bikes hold securely on frame.
Good Value. I would definitely recommend.
Great Rack     On: 2008-01-16

I am a college student who parks in a garage on campus and rides my bike from there to my classes and work. This rack is ideal for me as it has served a perfectly convenient and functional rack on my Jeep. It folds easily, makes very little noise if secured while driving, and still hasnt began to rust even after 6 months of periodic use. I STRONGLY recommend buying the Allen hitch lock kit for this as people really do like to steal these, at least in my area. Back to the rack though, I use it almost everyday, it is never removed from my vehicle, rain, snow, or shine and it is still holding up great. The only complaint that I have is that one of the securing straps broke about 3 weeks into use. Allen has a lifetime warranty on such things, but I have yet to call and get it replaced. I would recommend this product to anyone in the market for a bike rack as the best bang for your buck.
Competent product     On: 2007-12-31

This is a well constructed product generally. The bike restraints should be rubber instead of nylon but they will basically do the job. The nylon restrains that come with the frame do not competently keep bikes apart. You can, however, use Thule ones as they fit. Best for two bikes ... three or more require removal of seats and turning of HBars.
Don't spend your money     On: 2007-12-06

I purchased this to take my familys 4 bikes on vacation. While on vacation, 500 miles from home, 4 out of the 8 tie down straps tore. After the 2nd strap tore I started to look for a reason. The straps are fasten to the rack with a staple, yes I did say a single staple! Needless to say I was very careful not to "over tighten" the bikes again, but it didnt work I lost 2 more. Luckily the 4 straps that broke were all on different bikes. Glad I took extra straps along...
Stack, strap & go     On: 2007-11-05

Ive owned this product for about 1 month, so far its worked fine. Strong, durable & stable, only thing is the capacity is only 130 lbs.
great !     On: 2007-10-23

Durable and easy to use, fairly lightweight and easy to store... especially important for a mom with little ones!
Not a Bad Way to Take Bikes to Trail     On: 2007-10-20

This is a probably one of the best bike rack choices. It fits into the hitch and folds out of the way for access to the rear of the vehicle. The only thing I did not like is the bikes are secured with a strap. I would have preferred a mechanic clamp or even something that locks. However it still is one of the better racks.

Pros
-it folds out of way
-pretty easy to put bikes on
-holds 4 bikes
-basically does the job
-solid frame and design to support weight

Cons
-does not fit female bikes well without an adapter
-attaches to receiver with none slip bolt instead of
standard 5/8 -I drilled hole bigger; it does not lock
to receiver without buying extra
attachment (thats why I drilled mine)
-straps seem secure but for longer
distance a mechanical device would be better
-no way to lock bikes into rack
-bikes are put on rack alternating pedals;
they are about 5 to 6 inches apart

I know I was tough with my critic but I give it 4 stars because even with its faults it still is a good bike rack and well worth the money.
Great Family Bike Rack     On: 2007-10-19

This is a fantastic bike rack for a family. Fits 4 bikes (provided theyre adult size....kid size bikes arent wide enough for both braces to fit inside the frame). Rides without rattling. Kinda heavy but not unmanageable. Amazon price was over $100.00 cheaper than the bike shop. Hard to beat that!
Good Rack     On: 2007-10-10

The Rack is well made and plenty sturdy. I like the fact that I dont have to take it off to lower my tailgate. I do wish it had different ties than the nylon straps and that it came with a locking hitch pin. The hitch pin that comes with it is not quickly removable without tools. Other than those minor details its a great rack for the price.
fast delivery... box crushed     On: 2007-10-06

I got my rack yesterday by UPS and the box was crushed and torn as if someone had tried to open it or carry it by the stapled ends. LUCKY for me NO parts were missing and it was not scratched. Assembled real nice and looks sturdy. Hope it works as we tow a SUV behind our motorhome and sometimes we go for hours before we stop to check. Did place a strap around SUV trunk and rack so as to prevent the rack from dropping down.
Be careful for Spare Tires     On: 2007-10-06

So excited to get this, went to put it on and it wont fit. I have a spare tire on my back door. Granted its a huge full size tire but because of it I cant get the rack mounted - the receiver isnt far enought out. With exception to that I was easy to put together and while playing with it seemed really easy to use.

grest carrier     On: 2007-09-29

We needed a carrier that would carry an adult tricycle and 2 kids bikes with training wheels and this 4 bike carrier worked great. We used some bungy straps to keep it stable but there is hardley any sway behined our motorhome or on the back of the car. This was a great purchase!!!!
Work's Nicely.     On: 2007-09-24

The rack is nice and sturdy, and easy to use. Bikes stay on without loosening. It fits my Jeep Cherokee nicely.

The strapping system is designed for standard mens bikes, but can be made to hold kids bikes with a little creativity, but no additional parts.

Fully loaded, it can be heavy and awkward for 1 person to lower it for opening the hatch.
Gr8 item, Gr8 value, hitch hole is not 5/8" but has special bolt.     On: 2007-09-06

This is the best value for your dollar. The hitch tilts so you can get into your hatchback, is sturdy, and recesses when there are no bikes. Compared to other hitches this one is terrific. I bought a 5/8" locking pin so no one would steal this great hitch off my car. I found out this hitch hole is not quite 5/8" which is a feature to prevent the rack from wobbling in the hitch. A special bolt comes with the hitch which would be painful to ratchet on and off your car frequently. It would work fine if you left the rack on your car a long time. The bolt could also be undone by a thief. Id rather have a hitch than no hitch at all so I drilled the hole to 5/8" and can now use my locking pin. Overall, great value.

really good rack great value     On: 2007-09-01

This rack works very well. It is very sturdy and easy to assemble. Ive shopped around for a better deal and am convinced there is not a better deal for a rack of this type anywhere. I highly recommend this rack at this price. It was even worth it with the shipping upgrade. 120 bucks,You cant beat it.

Excellent rack     On: 2007-08-31

The rack was a bargain price, easy to assemble, easy to use, sturdy, and swung out of the way of our SUV hatch. We just drove it with four adult mountain bikes on an eight hour drive into the sierras and on many dirt roads with absolutely no problems. I wondered about the weight of the four bikes and the rack on the wheels of the last bike when it was lowered to the pavement, but it didnt cause any problems. My only very minor complaints are that the accompanying strap was too short for four bikes and there was an error in the diagram for the size of one of the bolts, but it was fairly obvious. If you have bikes with shocks, try putting the rack under the lower tube of the frame to raise the wheels higher off the ground.
Great Value Rack     On: 2007-08-26

For $99 cant beat this rack. No problems at all. Spring pull pins are very convenient for raising and lowering rack. No squeaks or rattles. Very satisfied.
Allen Deluxe 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack     On: 2007-08-25

Didnt even get to use it. Rack was received but was missing the screws and bolts, couldnt exchange it because Amazon was out of stock and couldnt replace it until October so I had to return it and request for a refund. Rack was shipped in its original box but it was all beat up and was all taped, the screws and bolts couldve fall out.

Good Value - Easy to Use     On: 2007-08-23

Easy to assemble and install on hitch. Purchased hitch from U-Haul for $160. Took 30 minutes to assemble rack, install hitch and rack.

A real bargain compared to what they charge at bike stores.
Allen Bike Hitch - looks good!     On: 2007-08-23

I have not used this item yet - but the assembly was easy and the overall quality of the product looks excellent. I was able to pack several sizes of bike onto it fairly easily. It fits onto our hitch nicely and folds very easily.
Well made     On: 2007-08-14

A well made heavy duty hitch that is very stable, even with 4 bikes on it.Well worth the price.
fantastic solution for hauling bikes     On: 2007-08-14

I was a little apprehensive to purchase this rack, even with all of the good reviews. Ive always had either Yakima or Thule products and thought that a $100 rack wouldnt really be that great. Well Im sure glad that I bought this rack. It is every bit as stable as the more expensive ones, it was easy to put together, mounts easily, the bikes fit on easy and remain stable during transport. The straps hold the bikes stable and could be inexpensively replaced if necessary. All in all a super buy. I purchased a 5/8" lock to keep someone from stealing the whole unit and I have a couple of cable locks that I run thru all of the frames and wheels and then around the bumper or down and around the frame to thrwart theives. And it sure is nice not to have to lift my bikes up on to the roof anymore and take off the front wheel to mount them into the rack like on my old roof rack.
Worked as described     On: 2007-08-13

I used this bike rack on two womens mountain bikes, one mens mountain bike and a childs bike and it worked great. Very secure with no sway

tongue was too short and did not mount in hitch and allow rack to work without contacting the car. had to add extension to bring rack out from back of car, 4 inches added. Cost me additional $38. Very sturdy rack for the price..
Very well made and user friendly     On: 2007-08-04

My previous rack experience came from a Saris Bones, 3 bike rack, which did the job, but made getting in the trunk difficult...

I noticed this hitch on Amazon, but before finding this product link via Amazon there was another one with a diagram showing the strap to prevent wobble connected to the trunk or door of a vehicle. This particular product link did not show this, so I assumed it didnt have or need the wobble strap and was a different model.

I got the product and it does in fact have the strap. Officially it is listed as the 440RR. I was also surprised at looking at the other 40 reviews that noone, at least for this version, has mentioned the strap or a need for it?

At any rate, strap aside for now.. The product is as good as everyone says. It came in a damaged box as it did for others, but I assembled the unit in about 20 minutes time (moderately adept at mechanicle things, but even someone without skills could do this). I inserted the no wobble pin in my 1 1/4" receiver on my 99 grand prix without issue (tightening all bolts with socket wrenches).

I then loaded on a few bikes for a test (we have 3 for now, the 4th will be useful in a few years). With one full size mountain bike and a kids bike (4 year old style bike with the big cross bars), it did not wobble much. On the way back from a short trip I tried this wobble strap attached to the trunk, but really couldnt see how it prevented any further wobble, as there wasnt a whole lot of wobble to start with.

The only issue I had was getting my sons bike on the rack, with those oversized cross bars. I had to actually strap it to the bottom crossbar near the front wheel and through the very narrow cross bar area by the rear brakes. A little tricky but it worked for now, though I could probably get that tensioner device to make things easier.

Great product all around so far, with lifetime warranty on defects.
Problematic but good buy     On: 2007-08-04

This is well made but poorly designed. The rack is not designed for a standard 5/8 hitch pin or hitch pin lock so one has to use the "no vibrate" bolt which takes 2 open end wrenches or 1 open end wrench and a socket set to install and remove it (with the supplied ny-lock nut) every time you use it. It needs the "no vibrate" bolt because it is so loose in a 2" receiver it would wobble badly. The "hardware" to "hold down" the bikes consists of nylon straps with a cinch buckle which allows the bikes to sway back and forth no matter how tight you can cinch them (there is no friction) instead of a mechanical tightener that grabs it from the top and bottom. I just installed it but I dont think Ill keep it even though the price is right.

Great hitch, easy to use.     On: 2007-07-27

We searched and searched and read a lot of reviews before purchasing this hitch. For 2 sincerely unhandy people, we managed to attach it without too much distress. The main issue was that we could not figure out how to "drop the muffler" on our 06 Honda Odyssey, and so in the end didnt. So the hitch is attached with minus one bolt -- which we intend to fix as soon as we can. However we have used it a few times on long trips already and there is no sign of any movement/swaying at all. The feature which allows you to access the back of the van without taking the hitch off is great -- even my 7 year old can do it! The one minor snag is that the hitch is slightly too wide for my bike (female) and so it is quite a tight fit getting it on there. OVerall great hitch, not too bad to install (takes 2 people, it is heavy to maneuver.)
Awesome - Great Value     On: 2007-07-19

This was an instant problem solver and for 100 bucks i couldnt ask for anything more.. This is a great product.. and if you are thinking about buying it.. Buy it.

Oops!     On: 2007-07-18

I bought this for a Subaru Outback, only to discover it would require a custom built receiver. I made the poor assumption that Subarus would inherently be designed for this type of accessory not so. Make certain it can be used with your vehicle before purchasing.

If returning this one, I recommend wrapping the actual box in bubble wrap and wrapping that with shipping paper. The box Amazon uses is ridiculously ineffective- something aforementioned in other reviews.

Other than that, it arrived as described. The decal fell off but I wasnt concerned about that. Unfortunately, I couldnt road test it! Instead, I bought a individual racks to mount to the luggage rack. I will say that I dont miss attaching a rear mounted rack to the back of my car every time I need to transport my bikes (I used to use a Yamaha in the past with a different car). On the flip side, once the top racks are installed theyre basically there forever unless you want to go through the hassle of removal each time theyre needed. Also, lifting bikes to the roof can be awkward.

easy to install and uninstall, sturdy, tilts so you can open the trunk, Id say go for it, the price is beautiful
4-Bike Mount Rack - 2" receiver     On: 2007-07-08

We are very pleased with this rack. Love the individual straps, no more many many straps/bungee cords!! We have a Suburban, was very easy to lower the rack (with bikes still mounted on) to have access to back of car. Hitch (compared what we used previously) was easy to handle with installing onto or removing from car, by yourself. Great item!!!
Solid Product at a very reasonable price.     On: 2007-06-27

I was pleasantly surprise by the thickness built of this bike rack. The arms folds down when not in use and you can tilt it down to an angle access your trunk or SUV. This product is built in USA and not some China parts that will break just as fast. Since the price difference between 2 or 3 or 4 bike rack was minimal I just went for the biggest one. Its kinda real long if you only have 1 or 2 bikes as you must slide your bike all the way in. Then again, more people is always more fun ona bike ride. If youre like me that lives in the city, youll beg for some safe roads to bike on, then this will help you get to your desired park without risking your life at every turn. The rack is well constructed and dont use those cheap shinny enamel paint so no worries of getting it scratched. I think it is just as reliable as the higher priced Yakima or Thule rack. I definitively recommend it. It has a lifetime warrantee and comes well packaged.
Great Rack     On: 2007-06-27

After reading several reviews I went with this rack. A lot of racks got lousy reviews because they were loose and rattled in the reciever. This one arrived promptly, was easy to assemble, and easy to use. It doesnt rattle, seems very secure in the rack, and has done well on the couple of trips Ive used it on so far. The tilt-down feature makes it easy to open the rear hatch on our SUV without removing the rack.

very good rack     On: 2007-06-19

I originally had an Allen trunk mount rack. I liked the ease with which you mounted the bikes. For overall ease of use, I returned that and bought the hitch mount. I like the way the mounting arms fold down out of the way when not in use. I have the 4 bike model, and have so far only loaded 2 bikes on it. Seem like the bikes are held securely enough. I have not taken the bikes a long distance, so you will have to rely on others for how this holds up over the long haul. I could not see any real benefits from racks that cost twice as much. Im satisfied with the Allen and recommend it.
Great Rack     On: 2007-06-14

The box came a little damaged, but the rack was well packed and received no damage. Had it together in no time and like other users, used locktite to secure bolts. Just took two bikes for a weekend trip about 3 hours away...done great! For the money, this rack cannot be beat. Like others, I wish Allen could come up with some other type of technique for fastening the lower wheels (other than included strap).
Allen Bike Rack 2 inch receiver     On: 2007-06-10

I received the Allen Bike rack and was surprised to see how strong the frame was. I did get 3 bikes on the Rack with no problem. I like the way in tilts out so I can open my truck tailgate, it gives me lots of room. I
am very happy with this rack. I leave it attached to my truck all the time.

Love Allen Deluxe 4-Bike Hitch Rack     On: 2007-06-08

I was a little concerned about the hitch rack when I saw that comparable hitch bike racks were so much mor expensive. I found there was no reason for concern. I love it! It is solid and easy to use. By pivoting it out of position I can raise the back of my Expedition.

Its really worth the money. Id recommend to other. The two features that I like are fold away from the trunk and fold down bar where you are not carry any bike.

the only change I would suggest is to have a quick connector (instead of the nut and bold) so I can quickly remove it from my truck.
I Like it     On: 2007-05-31

As others have mentioned, the extra strap is a bother, but necessary. My car had a 1.25" receiver when I bought it, so this was a good product for me. I will be having the hitch hole drilled so I can lock it to my receiver - wouldnt do to have all the bikes taken at once...
Simple, effective and economical     On: 2007-05-27

Tried two other types of racks with no joy; third time lucky. Works a treat, holds my bike and the wifes and the two kids (11 & 13) bike with no worries.

Tried two other types of racks with no joy; third time lucky. Works a treat, holds my bike and the wifes and the two kids (11 & 13) bike with no worries.

A good solid build and simple construction.
Very nice rack, great price!     On: 2007-05-14

Last year I had the SAME rack (Allen Deluxe 4-bike) for a 2" receiver, but I sold the Explorer and bought a crossover that has only a 1.25" receiver.

Still a REAL nice rack, especially at the abt $120 price point (sells for $160 in local bike shops). Only thing I dont like in the 1.25" unit is the thru-hole to bolt (or lock) it to the cars receiver is too small.

It comes with a "special" nut and bolt to fasten to the car (supposedly wobble-free...), but it does not allow you to install a standard LOCK instead, like the 2" unit did. I need to bring it to someone to drill it out.

Using the "wobble free" bolt is not as secure as a lock, not as easy to take off the vehicle, and causes the unit to tilt sideways while installed.

Still worth the price, just get the hole drilled out.

Oh yeah, and trash that strap that is supposed to secure to the vehicles window or tailgate. My 2" unit last year did not include this piece, not sure why they need it on this unit. Seems it will not be good for the vehicles finish. Seems like a poor afterthought to keep the unit less wobbly.

Good basic bike rack. Holds four full-size bikes. Note strap to back of vehicle required to stabilize rack.
should be designed better.     On: 2007-04-05

Its good to hold 4 bikes. But I cant open the rear hatch door. I saw other similar product that can lower the rack and let people open the rear hatch door.
Great Bike Rack for the price!     On: 2007-03-28

Close to a 2,000 mile road trip with four bikes loaded on and not a problem. Very happy with my purchase. Thank you.

I bought this hoping it would work as a carrier for the family outings. It has been excellent. Good consruction and very easy to use. I recommend it highly.

The Allen bike rack is constructed well however it is made in China. The bike straps are cumbersome to use as you must unthread to remove a bike and then rethread them to secure a bike. It would have been nice to have clamps like the Yakima and Thule. Overall a good rack.
Good Choice     On: 2007-01-11

This is a very sturdy carrier. Easy to assemble and easy to install. Well worth the price versus nearly identical carriers at twice the price.

Awesome bike rack. Works as advertised and very well built!
Worth it and more     On: 2007-01-09

I shopped around, and found this one. Rarely today do you get more than what you pay for. This has all the features you would want. Solid stable rack. Easy on and off. Nice system to fasten the bikes to the rack. Tilts out so you can open the back hatch door. Folds down for easy storage. Look no further. Thanks Allen, job well done.
This is the one!

Look no further. This is a quality item. It is made in the USA and is much nicer than the higher-priced units I saw in retail stores that were made overseas.

allows accessibility to rear of suv, easy assembly, good seating for the bike, and competitively priced

Very happy with this rack     On: 2007-01-08

I have been using the rack for a couple of months, and I am very happy with it. It is quite solid and convenient to use. The strap does not hurt the car at all. It is slightly inconvenient to have to undo the strap to open the trunk of my car, but it really only takes a few seconds. It carries my bikes very securely, and I can get them on and off the rack in no time.

One thing that was a surprise to me was the rack is fastened into the received with a special "no-wobble" bolt rather than a standard pin. This takes some time to install, and you really need to torque the bolt if you want it to stay tight. I have had to set aside the right size wrench and socket just for use here so that I can install/uninstall the rack reasonably quickly. I am also concerned that the first part to wear out is going to be that special bolt, so I wish it had come with a spare.
Good product     On: 2007-01-04

Very pleased with its overall stability and strength, but not happy with the straps used to hold bikes in place. Still, good product for the price.

Good Bike Rack     On: 2007-01-03

Good design and very well made bike rack to hold four bikes. Folds flat and stores easily from hook on wall. Moves very little with the provided "no wobble" bolt. You do need two wrenches to install the bolt onto the 2 in. receiver
Pretty good.     On: 2006-12-18

It was really easy to put together and use. It was well packed - it emerged unscathed from a very scathed box. The steel seems thin until you relaize that it is just carrying bikes, not a trailor. It is strong enough and doesnt weigh a ton.

However... It comes in three main pieces that you bolt together. The resulting rack does exactly what it is supposed to. And it is solid. Thats almost enough. The problem is that a thief must remove, at most, two bolts to steal your bikes. I used some Locktite on the bolts and cured that little failing. Now the bolts cant come out and the rack is about perfect.
Excellent Bike Hitch     On: 2006-12-06

My future wife and I like to make a four hundred plus mile trip to visit friends on Mackinac Island in MI. After several years of walking the hills there I decided to spend the money and buy this hitch so that we could take our bikes and see more of the island. I was looking for a hitch specific attachment that would not rub or create scratches on the car. I attached this to my Dodge Stratus and made the trip to and back without and problems. The bike rack easily is mounted and unmounted to the car hitch with a bolt. The rack fit easily in the trunk of my car when I dont need it. The bikes fit securly in place. I also used some bungie straps just to help secure my bikes a little more for the trip. If I need to get something out of the trunk, there is a quick release that lowers the rack a few feet so that I can swing the trunk hood open. I am more then quite pleased with this bike rack and will continue using it for our camping and vacation trips to visit our friends.

Couldn't be happier!     On: 2006-11-13

Bought this bike rack for the back of our RV and it works great. Easy on, easy off. Easily holds our 2 adult bikes, 1 tween bike and a kids bike with no problems. We can load all 4 in about 5 minutes and they are nice and secure. We are very happy with this purchase!

3. Easy fold down design.

I found this hitch easy to assembly and mount. I did alone in just a few minutes.
It is a little hard to get womens bikes on the hitch

Very rarely do you find a product that is well made and does exactly what its intended to do. This is one mighty fine bike rack that is about as close to perfect as you can get. We used it on a group camping trip this Summer and it carried 4 full-size bikes securely and was very easy to load and unload and attach the bikes. It is very durable and the fit and finish are superb. All the guys in the group were quite impressed with it and some may also purchase one. Buy one before the price gets raised to what its really worth.
A great bike rack     On: 2006-10-06

I had an earlier versions of this bike rack as well. I had to replace the old one because my car was hit from back bending the rack. But it saved my bumper!

They improved the tilting mechanism by adding pull up lock just behind the vertical main bar. They had a single pin lock before. It is very stable. I never tried carrying more than 2 bikes on this but currently I carry my bike converted to an electric bike which as about 60 lbs more weight on it.

I highly recommend this rack to anyone who like to keep their vehicle clear from their bikes and want to carry their bikes safely.

Sturdy, easily assembled, & fits all of our bikes.     On: 2006-09-18

I was apprehensive when the very damaged box arrived. The bike carrier itself was undamaged. I put it together easily in about ten minutes. Ive driven for 45-minutes with four bikes strapped down and noticed very little movement. My wifes unisex bike with low crossbar fit on this carrier as did my sons beach bike with triple cross bars and my run-of-the-mill 12-speed.
EASY TO USE, great bike rack!     On: 2006-08-16

We bought this bike rack to replace a strap-on rack that was a mess to put on. This Allen rack is AWESOME!!! My daughter and I have no trouble at all putting it on, taking it off, stowing it inside the minivan. It doesnt weigh so much as to make it difficult to do this. It is a wide rack and gives more stability than others I considered. My husband loves it too because we ALL pitch in, putting the bikes on off! I did have to purchase an "Allen 900B Tension Bar Bicycle Cross-Bar Adaptor" for my bike, (womens frame) because the design of its crossbar made it difficult to install on the rack without a tension bar. My daughters frame was a more traditional womens bike frame and fit perfectly on the rack without a tension bar. YOU CANT GO WRONG WITH THIS BIKE RACK! We love it -- we even gave it a name -- Herbie!

Allen bike carrier does the job     On: 2006-08-11

Ive had mine for three years now and it works well. The strap that another review complains about is necessary: It helps stabilize the rack in the 1 1/4 inch hitch. If I had to do it over, I probably would purchase a receiver with a 2 inch hitch--they appear to be more stable for bike carriers. But for those of us with the 1 1/4 inch receivers, this rack works great. The carrier is well made and keeps the bikes away from the car. The strap doest harm the car--my wife would kill me if I damaged her Lexus RX300!

I dont know much about bike racks, but this one seems to be very sturdy and well made. Weve used mounted racks in the past, but they were a pain to set up... my husband would get very frustrated trying to put the bikes on. This summer we decided to add a hitch receiver to our minivan and get this type of rack. It was definitely worth the money!!! My husband had a much easier time getting the bikes on. We especially loved the tilting option, which was easy to do. We were able to keep the rack on the entire vacation but could still easily open the back door of the van.

For the money I dont think your going to do better. I wish it had better tie downs but, it seems to be strong and well built.
This carrier is great!     On: 2006-07-28

Very easy to put together and well constructed. Wobbles a little when inserted into the 2" receiver but the "no wobble" hitch pin included with the rack fixed it. If you want a locking hitch pin with the "no wobble" feature, you will need to order the one made by Allen (part number 500L). I found it here on Amazon. A standard 5/8" pin wont work as I found out.

Hitch Mounted Bike Carrier was Great!!!     On: 2006-07-20

I purchased this Bike Rack for our annual camping trip to the Beach, we do a lot of bike riding while there...The rack held all 4 bikes very securely, and the fold-down feature made it easy to unload the fully-packed truck bed!! I left it on the truck the whole time we were there; the rack portion folds down so its out of the way in the interim. Very sturdy. Also comes with a strap to secure the bikes to the rack, if you wish. A VERY good purchase for the money.
Note the tie-back at the top. Otherwise, seems fine.
by: lowdough    On: 2006-07-14

Its a nice strong unit, albeit a little more akward to use than some carriers. The thing that disappointed me most, though, was the need to use a tie-back strap at the top of the carrier.

If you look carefully at the first picture, you can see a thin line going from top of the carrier back to the car. The instructions say to "Hook metal hook at the end of the top strap to a solid metal edge at the top edge of rear door/trunk."

This seems to provide a strong opportunity for scratching the car, since the painted surface of the car is now being used as a structural element by attaching a "hook" to the edge of the trunk.

Otherwise, it seems ok.

Allen Deluxe Hitch Mounted 4-Bike Carrier     On: 2006-06-29

This Hitch was better than expected. It was heavier duty than I had first thought. It folds up very nice and travels with bikes great. I looked for along time to decide on what to buy and this purchase was a good one. It does not sway like other bike carriers I read. It is a good purchase.
