I thought the cable would be longer.     On: 2008-06-18

Im sure this lock works wonderfully, but as it turns out, I havent used it yet. I didnt pay close enough attention to the length specifications, and I envisioned being able to loop it through both tires and possibly the seat, while having the ULock to lock the bike itself securely to something else. SO bottom line is that I dont feel comfortable leaving my very expensive bike just locked up somewhere, but I suppose Ill use the lock at some point and stop being so paranoid! :)
Beast of a U-Lock     On: 2008-05-25

This thing is the Kong Kong of U-Locks. The useful cable that comes with this set is excellent. I believe you would need a cutting blow torch to get through this thing (the U-lock not the cable). Thoughtful design with the dust/water protection drum that rotates to protect the entrance to the keyhole.

There is no place to mount this huge and heavy thing on my bike (full size mountain). With a water bottle cage + a small pack that hangs from my horizontal frame bar, I must carry the U-Lock in the Topeak Basket behind me. AND, it is HEAVY!

Be aware, this Theft Protection Program they tout is a bit of a scam. You must pay for this additional service. Also, you cannot register nor sign up for the Theft Protection on line. You must first print out a form(s) and mail it (them) in. The address is not on any of the forms. You must go back into the site to locate the mailing address.

The process of signing up for eventual support and FAQ information is a complicated event that required setting up an account that duplicates many of the registering steps and information you have just completed earlier.

BUT: This thing will definitely deter any thief that I can imagine. Isnt that the primary function anyway?

good lock bad mount     On: 2008-05-21

It wont fit on a MTB frame and even if it would when the spline-lock bracket sustains any vibration the heavy lock ultimately falls off and knocks your frame or bruises your leg or causes an accident; its unsafe. Its heavy-duty yes, but only transport it in a backpack otherwise youll be very sorry.
it is so so heavy     On: 2007-12-20

I bought this for my son to have for his bike. I see no way he will be able to ride with this around his bike. It is so heavy. Must be good for when he is home.
Unreliable if left for long period of time.     On: 2007-04-22

I had my mongoose bike locked with this U-lock and left it overnight (in Brooklyn projects area) only to find out the next morning that the lock was busted up in pieces and the bike was gone, they probably used a hammer or something. Im giving this review 2 stars instead of 1 because i dont know exactly how much time it took for them to brake it. One things for sure i wouldnt trust this lock a specially if left on for long period of time. (Note: i used lock alone without the chain).

great lock for a great price!     On: 2007-04-10

i live in brooklyn and after doing our research my boyfriend and i decided to get this lock set- we werent disappointed. solid quality lock that is still light and easy to bring around with you (unlike those kryptonite chains you see people riding around with wearing them like midevil torture belts) weve never had a problem- the only thing i would want to upgrade is that the cord is a bit short for my bike, though my boyfriend ha had not problem- i just got an additional cord- no problem...
Right now I am in my room...     On: 2007-01-18

and my bike is at class. I spent 10 minutes fiddling with it, and could not get it open. The key turns the lock, but its stuck good. It often didnt open on the first try, but now its stuck for real. I will try another key, but Im not happy now, after having to walk back.

edit: I found that knocking on the side of the lock barrel helps the most, as with rapidly turning the key. Pulling on the U is useless. I added some oil (low temperature engine oil), and it seems to be much better. I think its worst in below-freezing temperatures. Still, better, but DO NOT RECOMEND. If you havent bought it yet, buy a different lock.

Bicycle U-Lock DT 5012     On: 2007-01-05

Great product, works well. Nice to get set of 4 extra keys for safekeeping - tough to reorder keys. Nice to have both cable and ULock combo together - works well.

Excellent Lock     On: 2006-11-02

Does the job and does it well!! It is a lock where it comes down to if they get through it they can keep the bike. But it would take a tank to get this lock undone. I recommend this to anyone and everyone needing a lock. The great thing about it is that its cheap and really effective.
Happy with security of lock, but not sure of quality of product overall.     On: 2006-09-05

Havent used the lock in a few months, and I cant get it to open (I have the key, and it turns the lock, but cant get the lock to pull apart).
I thought this lock was well made, and secure, but it isnt working now. So, this is a quality issue. I will be able to return it to the store I bought it from, and get a replacement, but it is something to consider.
Strong, Safe and BIG     On: 2005-10-27

Yup, this is a big one! I cant imagine ANYONE being able to steal a bike (if you attach it like they tell you to with the cable) or your front wheel/tire -- and you dont have to take it off the fork to secure it!!! Thats a shortcoming with a lock that DOESNT include a cable. Even with a quick-release front wheel, its a pain to take it off and then put it back on (straight) when you return to your bike. But if you dont have a way to carry this thing, you might decide its too big and bulky. Ive decided its worth the trouble of lugging it around, but then I ride in the city and prefer to have a bike to ride rather than an empty front fork -- or worse -- an empty bike rack.
Strong, but bulky.     On: 2005-09-18

This is about one of the heaviest locks I have seen on the market, the mounting bracket will not fit my road bike, but it probably will keep my bike safe from someone stealing it. The added cable is a definite extra.
