Great bike!     On: 2008-07-08

I have purchased a Kent 20" folder in the past (sadly no longer made) and really loved it. Still, it was slightly bulky for my needs and a bit heavy.

The 16" magnesium folder is much lighter and much more compact. It is more easily carried in the trunk or brought on a train. Still, it is not small enough to carry on an airliner and checking it is an expensive option.

The only other downside is that the 16" folder is not nearly as fast as the 20". Everything is a compromise to get the best results.

Are there better and faster 16" folders out there? Yes. But the Kent is significantly cheaper, and my gut says will still be usable long after the more expensive competitors have given out.

Buy it while you still can; the drop of the dollar and cost of manufacturing appears to be causing Kent to question whether they still want to make this bike.
Superior design     On: 2008-06-23

Superior design, light weight, great value. This is the folding bike you want. Beats out all the competition at any price.
4 minus, easy but often adjustments     On: 2008-06-15

To be short, I have it for couple of months now;

PROS: light, easy adjustable, easy fold - unfold, springy seat, nice ride, soft and WIDE tires - no slippages, little or no rust, and comparing to $400 bikes - best for the money.

CONS: easy but often adjustments, seat is not for a long ride, rim ends welding are somewhat prominent so brake rubbing occurs, cranks are short, pedals need to be flipped over to the flat side, but once flipped you are good to go.

Thank you,
Polegin

P.S. suggestions for a folding bike $100 - $200 price range are greatly appreciated.

Very compact bike, rides like it     On: 2008-06-13

Just received this today. Good for commuting on public transportation or putting in car trunk. Easy to fold and set up. Not a long distance or hill climbing tool.

This bike has small fenders unlike the one in the photo. The peddles fold but are not well designed. They dont unfold flat (they have a bit of a slant to them. )

It will work well for my purpose put in car to ride 2/3 mile from parking to office.

This bike is very small and light. Quite nice for the price point and cost. It has a very small wheelbase consequently you have to be a fairly steady rider and I wouldnt recommend traveling at high speed down large hills, For flat urban riding commuters it will be great. What the short wheelbase gets you is the ability to ride and turn in very tight places. I can just about make a U turn in a wide hallway. I took it up a long wheelchair ramp with no problems.

Most everything is alloy and the bike was actually well set up out of the box. I didnt have to do a lot of tweeking. Most importantly the breaks were set up properly and the gears did work as they were supposed to.

This bike is not a replacement for a full sized bike. It has very short cranks an small wheels so it is not going to hill climb all that well and it wont cruise at over 20 mph like my $ 2,500 dollar road bike will. However it cost less than 7% as much, and folds up tiny. So if you are looking for something that will fold up really small and can take you a mile or so, or farther if you are in no particular hurry. (it is easy to peddle at the pace a fast jogger will go). Than this is the bike for you.

Mechanically it exceeded my expectations at this price point. I am 510" with 30" inseam the seat is just a tad too short for me for long distances. If you are of short stature or need a bike for a child (that wont abuse it) than this bike may be a better all around machine.
Kent Folding Bike     On: 2008-06-02

This is a very neat, cleverly made folding bicycle. The quality is surprisingly good. It is not as light as I thought it would be, but it is light. I wouldnt care to take it on long rides but for short rides around the neighborhood or to get around an RV park or the race track pits, you cant beat it. They appear to have corrected some of the faults that were documented in prior reviews. Assembly is quick and there is a lot of adjustment capability.
Good buy for the bucks     On: 2008-05-31

A pair of these were purchased to use on camping trips,,Weight is excellent and design is acceptable..Units arrived with normal " China in a box packing" ( some nicks, dents and scratches ) setup required a lot of " tweeking " especailly the handelbar assembly ... For a folder, its a good buy for the $$$ but dont expect to take it out of the box and ride off into the sunset without having to play with it first....
wonderful bike     On: 2008-05-06

Ive using this bike for 8 months becouse i need to park far from the university so i need a compact folding bike and this one is just perfect for this. im very happy with this product it is durable and i did not have any problem with this bike. it is not heavy and it is easy to put together.great
product.
Would like an answer from one of you that owns a Kent folder     On: 2008-04-05

Even though I do not own one, I think I will buy one based upon the reviews I have read. I do not know another way to communicate with some of you owners. Since I do not want to skew the rating either direction, I entered the average of 4 stars. My question is: I want to take a folding bike like this one on an airplane and not pay a premium of near $100 each way. The length+width+height must be less than 62 inches. The folded dimensions are listed as 27x24x15 inches which totals to 66 inches. I was wondering if the seat with post can be remove and then would the new folded dimensions be 62 inches or less? I can put the seat and post in another suit case. Can you help me by making the measurement for me?
Thank you, Between CO & HI.
You may need some improvements     On: 2008-03-28

When I rode this bike first, my feeling was so sad because I had never felt such a bad ride quality. After my first riding, I bouht a $20 seat and $8 pedals. By adding these accessories, the quality was dramatically improved.

Wheels of 16 inches are slightly small for me, and if I buy a next folding byke, I will select that of 20 inches.
Good for the money, but read on...     On: 2008-03-22

The frame is very good. The seat doesnt raise high enough from the pedals to get a full leg extension (Im 58½"). This causes your legs to tire easily. The cranks are noticeably shorter than a normal bike. This contributes to the leg fatigue, and prevents you from putting real power into your stroke. This is kind of frustrating. I dont know how this fact compares to other folding bikes. Be prepared to adjust to a shorter wheelbase, which means the steering is markedly more responsive and can be easy to over-correct at first. As others have stated, the components are economy but work ok. It is a bit awkward to carry when folded, but doable. It is much easier to carry by the frame handle when NOT folded - so if you can port it that way and then fold it to store, you will have a better experience. The folding pedals are usable on only the top side, but they can lock in the open position with a twist of a pin on the underside. In summary, its much better than walking from the bus stop or parking lot but dont mistake it for a normal riding bike.
Easy and convenient     On: 2008-01-07

The bike came 90% assembled. The rest was very easy. It is light and easy to use and very helpful.
Nice for the price...     On: 2008-01-03

This bike, while having bottom of the line components, is a good value for the price. Once you complete the initial unpacking and setup of the bike, it does fold and unfold in less than a minute. Great for storing in the trunk and taking short trips for errands or around campus. I would suggest getting a more comfortable seat, and invest in a strap (either a bungee or pull strap) in order to both hold the bike together when it is folded and to strap down anything you carry on the back rack.
Kent folding bikes     On: 2007-12-31

These bikes seem strong and light. They are just what we wanted to carry along in the van when we pulled our travel trailer. They are not like riding a full size bike because our legs seem to tire more quickly but we do not plan on taking any long distance trips. The bikes look great and seem to be well built.
good toy     On: 2007-12-17

This morning my car broke down, and it finally gave me the right excuse to take out this folding bike from the package which arrived 2 weeks ago. The assembly took 5 minutes (on cutting and taring packing papers/wires), and no tools are required. After spending another 2 minutes on pumping air, the bike was ready to ride.

I agree with what had been said by all 15 reviewers. Regardless of the stars they gave, their reviews were true in some aspects. My own impression on this bike is that its a nice toy, but not really a pragmatic way of daily commute.

The bike is slow, and I got exhausted much sooner than I thought I would be. As a runner of 20-30 weekly mileage, I am fit. But the 6 miles pedaling to work took me a little more than half hour, almost the same time as I jogging the same distance. And I felt more tired than jogging. On my way to work, there are a couple of segments of road where theres no shoulder or side walk. With a bike of this speed, its rather easy to annoy auto drivers. This is my major complaint.

The uneven folding pedals are one of minor annoyances. Sharing road with other traffics, sometimes it got in the way just when you need a fast start. In a sense, its a safety concern. The derailleur is not precise, but not to the point that you would wish it were not there. Although everyone likes its light weight, I wish it could be even lighter.

On the positive side, the design is very well thoughtful. As a folding bike, it folds and unfolds very easily. The bike looks and feels sturdy. I would recommend it for a 2-3 miles riding. Longer than that you get tired, and shorter than that youd rather walk or run. When not used as a transportation tool, its a nice toy to play around.
A decent bike for the price, but...     On: 2007-10-27

I got this bicycle to be able to ride approx. 1 mile from where I park my car to my work to save some time. The bike came pretty much preassembled, but like others mentioned it needed some adjusting/tightening (shifter, brakes, some screws). There was nothing wrong with it and it did not get damaged during shipping. It also rode fairly well for something this size, although as others mentioned - it was quite slow (uphill people pass me walking :/).

I did end up returning this bike. You might not be ready for it when you order, but what I couldnt take (and didnt quite think about it) was the laugh factor. If you have no objection walking around without your pants wearing a pink beret on your head then this bike is for you. If however you do mind people laughing out loud at you like they saw a circus clown on a child bike (and that is how you are going to look like) then perhaps you should reconsider. One guy almost crashed his car passing me because his eyes got full of tears from laughing - at me. I decided Id rather wear pastel pink beret than ride it again... But that was me.

So like I say, the bike technically is nice, the ride is decent, its light, and the price is more than fair. But if you cant see yourself as a circus mascot then I suggest you move on.

Value for money     On: 2007-10-17

I have had plenty of fun with bike so far. I take my kids on the luggage rack; they love to ride on it. I can take them to the park on the luggage rack; lower the seat and let them ride it. There is no real use for me for the folding feature. However, since this is light weight and small size I can store it in my small apartment than a large bike. This is worth the money I spend on it. Assembly was not a problem; takes about 10 mins, starting from opening the box. There is really nothing to complain. Some people have had trouble riding this fast enough. This is slower than a regular bike. But very easy to ride because of the small wheels. The seat should be lifted a bit high for you to get the proper comfort level. I am 58" I have to pull the seat almost all the way up.
It's decent, but not suited for taller or heavier riders     On: 2007-08-28

Arrived in good condition. Unpackaged easily. There was NO MANUAL in the box, which is ok for me as Im a seasoned bicyclist. Minimal assembly. I really dig the cast magnesium alloy frame but the rest of the bike feels a bit cheap. The brake levers feel flimsy, the pulls are metal but the rest is plastic. I would expect them to break at some point with regular use. While the photo does not show it (I will try to post some customer images later), the bike I received included mudflaps/fenders. I had to adjust the front brake spring rebound as it tended to remain rubbing against the wheel on one side after releasing the brake. The V brakes themselves also are a bit on the cheap side.

As far as size, I am 511" and 165lbs. The bike feels a bit small for me, not unbearably so for short rides, but I would say if youre around my height, you probably want to buy a folding bike with 20" tires. With the handle bars extended most of the way up, the steering is sketchy and there is some flex in the bars.

Now allow me to contrast this bike with the 2003 Dahon Boardwalk folding bike that I own, which has 20" tires but was twice the price when new. Dahon is the market leader in folding bikes. The Dahon I own feels more solid, fits me better, and is made with higher quality components. Also, the one thing I didnt notice immediately, is that with a 16" tire bicycle, they have to make the cranks (the arm the pedal attaches to) shorter due to ground clearance. This means that your legs spin faster. The folding pedals (which must be folded out manually and locked into place with a little clip) can only be used on one side, the other side is not flat. This is fairly annoying and Ill likely replace the pedals with a set from Dahon which are spring loaded and both sides of the pedal are flat.

In conclusion, Ill probably stick with my Dahon for non-size critical travel applications (car, train, bus, etc). However, when it comes to flying with a bicycle, the Kent packages into an ordinary suitcase much easier that my Dahon would.

So is this bike a bargain for the price? I personally would say no. With regular use youll probably need to replace some parts sooner than later (brake pulls) which will put you near $200 in the end. For a similar price you can find a used Dahon that is constructed better, has as many as 8 speeds, 20" tires and is overall, a higher quality folding bicycle.
Fun mini bike for kids and adults     On: 2007-08-23

Fun mini bike. Easy to fold and unfold. Easy to transport. Good for paved road. Rear brake cable snapped during a 20 miles mountain bike ride in Grand Island, Michigan. Fortunately I had a repair kit to fix it. Front wheel was trapped by sand and I got thrown out once but bike did not break. Some people laughed when they saw me riding this little bike chasing my kids riding full size bikes.
totally satisfied     On: 2007-07-03

Better than the older model I have which I gave to my daughter. The new model with the 16" wheels instead of 20" is easier to transport and maneuver. Easier to fold, as well as to switch gears. Does not show spotting after exposure to rain. Everyone I meet in my condo, even some passersby on the street, tell me how much they admire my bike and want to know how much it cost and where to get it.
Light and easy to handle     On: 2007-06-27

As advertised the bike is really light and easy to handle as well.
It is a good deal for the price, I would say its quality and features are comparable to other folding bikes perhaps twice the price.
The folding procedure requires a bit of practice but after a while there is no problem with it at all.
Easy to like this bike     On: 2007-06-08

Small wheels but there is enough travel in the seat stem and the handle bar stem to allow an average sized rider (58"-6) to ride upright. I can only imagine the look of a rider on this bike, as I got many smiles and compliments riding on it.

Mechanically, the bike worked out of the box for the first bike. Since then, we purchased a second one which arrived in good shape and required only simple tuning (tightening one of the brake cables). The frame is strong and plenty stiff for our sidewalk/paved bike trial kind of riding. The derailier lacks precision but works ok. We considered a single speed Dahon before this purchase. In hindsight, it was the right choice to have the 6 speed.

This bike shines in easy fold and easy transport in car trunks/back seats. We would recommend tying with spongy after folding. We are still looking for cheap containers for air travels. Give us a headsup if any of you know of a good fit in bags or luggage.

Love the light weight. Good price. Like the look. Handling is ok and may need some transition time if you are used to a regular size bike. Would also recommend starting on low gear. We are splitted on upgrading some of the components at this time. Stay tuned.

Easy, light with convienent mobility     On: 2007-05-13

Good product. No assembly was required. Very easy to fold and un fold. (Watch the process on Youtube) Does require a additional chord to tie up after folding. The side stand came off on first day. This was fixed quite comfortably as it only required some tightening.

Cycle is a beauty and really light. Serves commuting purpose but definately not for the fast lane or long distance cycling. Overall an excellent product well worth the price.
Good, but not for everyone     On: 2007-05-10

I first came across this bicycle when I lived in Beijing, China. I actually bought three, for about $80 a shot: One with gears, and two single-speed ones. The one with gears was hopeless since the gear ratio was all wrong. I sold it on eBay. The single-speed ones I kept for quick hops to the bakery or the post office. I wouldnt recommend this type of bike for trips longer than 5 miles.
BUT: The technology behind this bike is amazing. The frame is a piece of art. The Beijing company behind this bicycle has top-notch German and French equipment to cast these excellent aluminum-magnesium frames. Ive seen some of these bicycles retrofitted with better components, and they look like a bicycle in the $600 range. Unfortunately, in the configuration offered here, the frame cant shine. The rear rack and all the other sub-par components distract from its superb quality. But if you are mechanically inclined, add a new crank, a better dérailleur, and, voilá, great bicycle. Just be prepared to spend some extra time and money. And please, while you are at it, please remove those really ugly frame stickers!

Light and Sloooooow!     On: 2007-02-24

I recently started a new job that paid substantially more than my last one. However, my daily commute went from 7.5 miles to 21.5 miles each way. To make matters worse, my new job is located downtown and parking is $9.90 a day. After a week of braving downtown traffic and shelling out almost $50 in parking fees, I decided to look for an alternative to snarled traffic and parking fees. I found a place to park my VW Jetta where I can easily hop on a bike path and ride 1.5 miles to work

I wanted a bike that would be small and light enough to take out of my trunk, unfold, ride to work, refold, and then take up a flight of stairs to my office. I chose the Kent Ultra Light folding bike because of its low weight and small size. I wanted a bike that I could store under my desk when I wasnt using it.

I ordered my bike from Amazon and received it within a week. The bike was completely assembled and folded up within a box. When I opened the box, I was surprised to see there was no packing material protecting the bike. The bike was basically just dropped into a box. This might explain why the bike came with a slightly bent back rim. Other than that, the bike looked to be in perfect shape. I took it out of the box and grabbed my digital scale. 25.6 lbs. Thats just about 11% more than the advertised weight, but still much less than comparable bikes. I folded the bike together, added air to the tires, and took it for a test spin. Because of the slightly bent back rim, I had to adjust the rear brakes.

Ive been commuting with my bike for a week now. Folding and unfolding the bike is a breeze. I believe it takes me about 5 seconds to fold and unfold the bike. When I fold the bike, I only fold down the handlebars and fold the bike in half. This compacts the bike down significantly and it easily fits under my desk. I do not adjust the seat or handlebar heights, nor do I fold the pedals in. Many people have stopped me to ask about the bike after seeing me fold it up so quickly. I have seen many peoples mouths drop open when I walk out of the building and unfold my bike and bike away 5 seconds later. They dont even get a chance to ask me about my bike.

Riding the bike has NOT been the best experience for me, however. The bike is geared very low and as a result is very slow. Having a bent back rim doesnt seem to help matters either. When biking within the city, the bike performs well because of the slow traffic, but once I get on the bike trail, I am quickly exhausted. It is demoralizing being passed by the other bikers. It is embarrassing pedaling as fast as I can just to pass a jogger. Ive ridden my 8 year old daughters bike a few times just to make her laugh. I would say this bike is about as fast as that. Another annoyance is with the pedals. Because they are folding pedals, only one side of the pedal is flat, the other side is curved in such a way that you cant pedal with it. Often times, when Im pedaling my heart out trying to pass a jogger, or an old lady in a walker, a pedal will flip over to the non useable side. Or sometimes the pedals will fold up for what ever reason. Ive been thinking about tossing out the folding pedals and replacing them with regular pedals.

PROS:
Folding, unfolding, and carrying this light-weight bicycle.

CONS:
Riding this light-weight bicycle.

Im still going to give this bike 4 out of 5 stars because Ive never ridden a folding bike before so maybe they are all slow. Or maybe Im just getting old and out of shape. Im very happy with the weight of the bike and the ease of folding it. The bike is going to pay for itself in less than a month and that alone is worthy of 5 stars. However, Kent should really work on their packaging though, this bent rim is annoying.

Resonably good bike     On: 2007-01-31

1. I had the bike for 2 weeks when I wrote this review.
2. It arrived in fairly good shape, no parts missing or improperly installed.
3. Only minimal adijustment required. More or less able to ride it right out of the box.
4. The frame is good quality, most other parts just medium or low cost components, as expected from the price.
5. For people who are used to cycling, you will think the gearing is too low. (for those who know what it means, the gear-inches are from 26 to 52) Good for climbing hill, not for high speed, which is OK for a bike that is meant for extending the range of public transit, fun during camping, and not for all day riding.
6. I am 510", and have to extend the seat to an inch beyond max on the seat post. Taller person will find it too low.
7. Lightest weight of the low cost folding bike I have found. Good buy for the money, but not the highest quality bike you can get.
8. Folds fairly easily after you get used to the steps. Need a bungie cord to hold it together in the folded position if you are going to carry it.
9. I can recommanded it to anyone who want a folding bike and dont want to spend a lot of money.

It is light weight, great quality, and price. Hey, where else you can find something like this.
Not for everday folding and unfolding     On: 2006-11-19

The price on this bike is good, but the folding is a bit of a hassle and time consuming...perhaps you need some practice and be really familiar with the bike if youre going to fold/unfold it everday. I think its excelent for camping or a trip to the beach in the trunk of your car. It is very lightweight as claimed. Also, it needs fine tunning on the deralier and brakes (but you probably need to do that with any new bike) The ride feels smooth and fun. For the price, I think its worth having this bike around. I recommend that you you make adjustment to the steering column, using an allen wrench, such that it folds down on the left side (relative the riders position), which would make an even more compact fold...but the default setting is just fine.
Decent design - Poor Execution     On: 2006-09-27

I put it together, but then the handlebar wouldnt come out easily for folding and puting in the trunk. Also, the shift mechanism in the rear wheel has very little clearance from the ground.
Visually, the finish quality looks very good however.
Not suitable for kids - the height is ok, but the reach for the handlebar is very awkward at low seat heights
