![]() Krypto Series 2 U-Lock 4" x 9" with Bracket By: Kryptonite Average Rating: 3.5 Total Reviews: 4 More Information it's not bad for medium to low bike crime areas Kryptonite STD U Lock seems to be a decent lock but it still can be "infiltrated" by a knowledgeable master thief/master lock picker in probably under 1 hour time. Im not too worried since it is sizable, hefty looking and very heavy (2 lbs), so it looks bigger than what I saw on other bikes in the bike rack and my bike is only valued at $285. The keys are very flimsy and forged with cheap metal so I wont be surprised in 2 months that they snap or are damaged. The Lock holder (cheap plastic) didnt work on my bike as the Lock is too big to fit anywhere so I just snug it into my rear rack. Comes with a cable (be warned, it can be cut quite easily so dont use it as a "main attachment" to a pole, bike rack, etc, just use it to secure your rear or front tires with the U Lock attached to a pole, bike rack.). In all, its not bad for medium to low bike crime areas but dont use it for expensive bikes, big cities, dangerous zones or in dark desolate areas where a thief can use high powered tools or torches. Seems good Hard to tell how a lock will hold up to the bike thiefs, but it seems to be a pretty good lock. I have to say my new bike will not get stolen as easily as my old one. I was skeptical about buying this because of the review stating that the barrel is hollow, but now that I have it I can tell you that the barrel is not very vulnerable. I do not really like the bike mount, but I am not familiar with them so I cant say there is anything better out there. I also have to say that I wouldnt buy this lock for the "insurance" unless you have a lot better bike than I do. Provides only very basic protection by: bravo11 On: 2007-08-14 I bought this for my friend, and on the surface, it looks like a fine lock. Unfortunately, its beauty is only skin deep and my disappointments started after I opened the box. Kryptonite only gives you 2 keys, which is really quite stingy, especially if youre prone to misplacing keys. (Planet Bike gives you 3 and Onguard gives you 5) Next, the locking mechanism only engages the U bar on one side - the other side is curved so it hooks inside the crossbar. This method might have worked well, however, since the crossbar is mostly hollow, the hooking region inside the crossbar is particularly very vulnerable since its no more than 2mm thick. As a matter of fact, the crossbar is almost entirely hollow - if you see in the picture, the area underneath the gray vinyl is hollow. Kryptonite color-codes their locks (a very bad idea since it tells would-be thieves what youre got from a distance), with the best ones in yellow and middle range in orange. This gray lock just screams cheap. I wouldnt protect an expensive bike with this lock, but it does come with up to $1251 in protection in case somebody does steal your bike. This lock has some good features like rubber washers at the base of the U to prevent rattle and the entire surface is coated in thick vinyl to protect your bikes finish, but when it comes to security, you can definitely do better. For the same money, I think the Onguard Bulldog is a better buy. OnGuard Bulldog STD Lock Great Lock This lock is easy to use and locks nicely. The key and cylinder function great; its easy to lock and unlock with smooth operation. My only gripe is that I would like the U-shape to be a little wider to make it easier to lock the front rim to the back rim and frame. It takes some fiddling with my road bike to get things to line up correctly. If you have a mountain or hybrid bike, it will be even harder, as my road bike tires are narrow (23-mm)and the rims are small. |
