perfect protection     On: 2008-01-30

i bought this item based on kryptonites reputation. i am not disappointed!

im using this lock and chain to secure a honda generator to a very large, very heavy ladder. i live in the santa cruz mountains, and we all have generators for when the power WILL go out. here, its not a matter of IF but always about WHEN.

the first day i had the generator, someone was already eyeballing it. i came outside to make some adjustments, and saw that someone had been messing with it already - and it was not even 2 hours old! that day, i ordered a new york noose with lock. theres a huge ladder next to the generator, which is now attached to it. if someone wants either one, theyll have to take both, making it very noisy, and hard to get away. :-) the generator weighs in at 260 lbs. the ladder is 18 feet tall, and weighs around 50 pounds.

i have subsequently seen that this chain has provided the desired protection. ive seen the chains nylon cover all mussed up, the generator cover on the ground, and the lock moved around. this $89 lock and chain has already saved a $4,000 generator from going to someone elses house, and is one of the best protection investments ive ever made. thank you, kryptonite!

Heavy Massive lock, but if you need it, you really need it

This pile of chain and lock weighs in at over 8 lbs, so its not something to carry around on a daily basis on a bicycle unless you really, really need it. I got mine to leave at work. Most folks are using cables and those U locks, and the cables are getting cut on a regular basis. The chain gives me a lot of different options for locking my bike up. The chain and lock are not totally unbreakable but like the old joke about outrunning a bear, I have the best lock in the bunch so its less likely it will be my bike that gets picked on.

My only complaint is that the nylon sleeve started to unravel the day I got it. Ive sewn it back up with some thread but my expectation is that Im going to have to sew my own sleeves. Oh yeah when I do, Ill be making two of them, so I can use the lock easier to fold the chain back around and hook it together. (not the ring side, thats fine, the lock end, so that there are two independent loops.

Still though better than the 5ft chain as the noose makes it so the ends dont have to meet, makes it a bit more flexible for locking and slightly lighter.
