Great First-Time Clipless Pedal     On: 2008-06-19

I had been riding with platform pedals and a powergrip strap. The strap was difficult to engage, so I found myself either riding without the strap or trying not to stop. So I decided to try some clipless pedals with some Shimano mountain shoes.

For the price, you sure cant beat the Crank Brothers Smarty pedals. They were easy to install (just need a 6mm hex key). It took me a few rides to get used to clicking in, but once Im in, they feel solid. The pedals made a big difference in my average speed. Getting out of them is easy: just a little twist of the ankle (either in or out).

Some may not like the "float" with Crank Brothers pedals, but I like it. So far, Im very happy with the pedals.
Good mountain bike/commuter pedal     On: 2007-05-20

I have used Shimano pedals in the past, but this design is much easier to get into when making frequent stops in traffic or on the trail. Im very happy with them. This is my second pair.

Pedals preferences are very subjective, and Ive spoken with two people who dislike Crank Brothers approach. One was because they felt that it allowed for too much float, meaning that your foot can pivot slightly so it seemed less secure to them. I found that took getting used to but find it very natural now compared to a rigid pedal system, such as toe clips or the Look pedal system.

Another person said his cleat screws got loose and he could not get his foot out. That is a common problem and can be avoided.

Everyone else Ive met who owns them loves these pedals.

One of my pedals lost its spring. I contacted Crank Brothers, they gave me a return authorization, I mailed them the broken pedal for $1.50, and they sent me a new one right away. Excellent customer service.
