| As part of the new Deore XT off-road component group, the
Shimano Hydraulic Disc Brake delivers a whole new level of braking performance
for racing and high performance mountain bikes. The hydraulic disc brake
offers numerous advantages. For example, the disc rotor is close to the
hub, so it isn't subjected to the mud and debris that normally collects
around the rim and tire. This means that the braking is more dependable
in wet or muddy conditions. |

Because the smaller pistons have less fluid displacement, they move faster
and come into contact with the rotor first when the brakes are applied.
This stabilizes the rotor, eliminates wobble, and helps reduce brake squeal.
Continued brake application activates the larger piston pair against and
already stabilized rotor. The result is silent, smooth, and progressively
responsive braking power.

Unlike most disc brakes which use a simple two piston caliper, the Shimano
disc brakes uses a four piston caliper comprised of two pairs of opposed
pistons in two different diameters, the same design used in high-performance
racing cars.
The quad-piston design allows the caliper to be made smaller while maintaining
a large brake pad contact surface. The result is a higher frictional coefficient
that translates into great braking power.

The system is environmentally friendly because the components are made
to precision tolerances that allow natural mineral oil to be used as the
hydraulic media. Unlike brake fluid, accidental spillage of mineral oil
won't damage surrounding surfaces nor pollute the environment.
The fluorine brake hose is impervious to water, oil, and heat. It's enclosed
in a braided stainless steel jacket that not only reinforces the hose
against expansion, but protects against cuts and abrasion. Stainless steel
means the hose will never rust or become tarnished.
|
| The brake lever fluid reservoir has a removable cap to allow a visual
check of the fluid level. A bleeder kit is available to remove air from
the system. Brake adjustment is virtually eliminated because the disc brake
uses no return springs, so the pads remain in contact with the rotor surface
regardless of the amount of wear. Pads use a long-wearing metallic lining
that assures years of trouble-free service. |
