It is hard for a young child to think about shifting, braking,
steering and pedaling at the same time. The Trail-A-Bike is setup
with a 5 speed shifting system. It uses a Gripshift shifter with
a Shimano rear derailleur. Shifts are clean and easily made by the
child. The pedals are wide and grip well. The alloy rear wheel is
strong and light.
The handlebars are fully adjustable. The angle and position can
easily be changed to fit your child. The Trail-A-Bike uses a gel
saddle that was reported to be comfortable by my son. Other features
include a rear fender, water bottle cage, safety flag, and a quick
release seatpost.
Riding with a Trail-A-Bike connected to your bike takes a little
getting used to. You can feel the the extra length of the bike behind
your bike and you can feel if the child shifts their weight. The
weight of the Trail-A-Bike is set over the rear wheel of your bike
and provides excellent traction when climbing steep hills on the
dirt. When climbing while out the saddle care should be taken to
keep the motion smooth.
The Trail-A-Bike works very well on and off-road. Navigation down
singletrack is good. The flexibility of the mounting bracket allows
switchbacks to be maneuvered. You can feel the Trail-A-Bike when
braking on steep descents. The weight on the rear wheel makes the
rear braking much more effective than usual. The Trail-A-Bike is
very narrow allowing you to traverse tight trail sections.
We recommend that you do not use an ultra-light seatpost. There
is extra stress put on the seatpost from the added weight. Use a
good quality strong seatpost like the Control Post from Control
Tech.
If you have a child and love to ride the Trail-A-Bike will expand
your possibilities.
